Circa 1890s Bravo Tobacco Advertising Poster

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $348.00

Issued by Thomas H. Hall in promotion of its "Bravo" line of "All-Tobacco Cigarettes," this magnificent Victorian era tobacco banner was produced for the purpose of displaying in tobacco shops. The full-color lithograph presents as its central image a woman of great beauty. Exemplifying the epitome of grace and social standing of the day, the woman is exquisitely dressed in the highest fashion of the day and reflects the attributes of the company's product: Sweet; Mild; Delicious and Fragrant. The image on this extremely rare tobacco advertising banner is especially appropriate since it relates directly to two tobacco card sets issued by the Thomas H. Hall Tobacco Company at this time: its set of "Beautiful Women of the World" and its set of "Actresses." Dating from the glory days of the nineteenth-century tobacco card insert, this is the only example of this poster we have ever seen. Thomas H. Hall was a very small manufacturer compared to others such as Allen & Ginter and Goodwin, so it is not surprising that their tobacco advertising banners, like their cards, are extremely rare. This large display still has its original metal hanger across the top border. Printed on heavy paper stock. A number of creases as well as a large vertical tear have been repaired on the reverse by means of tape. Light foxing and soiling is evident along the base and the piece displays a number of minor edge tears. Despite the minor defects the central image remains clean and bright and the poster displays beautifully. Overall in Very Good condition. Dimensions: 24 x 40 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $348.00
