1942 Greta Garbo Signed Bank Check In Framed Display
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $2,610.00
Bank check signed by screen legend Greta Garbo. The check, drawn on the Security First National Bank of Los Angeles, is dated July 10, 1942 and made out to Arnold Kennedy & Co. in the amount of $10.80. Garbo has beautifully signed the check in black ink along the bottom, with her long, flowing signature grading "10." One of early Hollywood's most famous actresses and four-time Oscar nominee during the 1930s, Garbo stunned the film community with her sudden retirement in 1941. From then until her passing in 1990 the Great Garbo lived in seclusion, shunning all photo, interview and signature requests. In fact, during her lifetime Garbo-signed items were so rare that fans often searched her garbage for examples, and her signature became widely recognized as the rarest and most valuable of all living persons. It is only since her death that a small number of signed pieces from her estate have found their way into the collecting world. The offered item provides an ideal signature example of the enigmatic star and, since it appears on a canceled check, also offers the collector an added measure of assurance with regard to authenticity. The check (6 x 2.75 inches) is in Excellent condition, with normal bank cancellation holes and stamps (none affecting the signature), a tiny tear in the right border and two staple holes. Handsomely mounted and framed together with a large black-and-white photo of Garbo to total dimensions of 21 x 27.5 inches. LOA from Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
