1960 Ray Charles Latin Casino Concert Poster

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,160.00

Very hip promotional poster heralding the appearance of Ray Charles on April 3, 1960 at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The blue-and-white "boxing poster style" broadside pictures a photo of Charles at the piano and features his name in large blue letters. This poster was originally displayed in the Philadelphia suburb of Chester where tickets were sold by a local club. The preprinted notations along the base note that "Bus Service Will Be Provided For $1.50 Extra." Below that is the handwritten pencil notation "Bus Leaves 348 Kerlin St. 5-P.M." Ray Charles was at the height of his legendary music career at the time this poster was issued. Less than two weeks after his April 3rd appearance at the Latin Casino, Charles was honored for his recent work by winning four Grammy Awards. Two were awarded for his rendition of Hoagy Carmichael's song "Georgia On My Mind" (with Charles' rendition since having become the official state song of Georgia in 1979), one for his landmark album, Genius of Ray Charles, and the fourth for his song "Let The Good Times Roll." One of the most talented and influential musicians of his era, Charles tackled and conquered a variety of different musical genres over the course of his career. At the time of his death, in 2004, Charles' many awards and honors included twelve Grammy Awards, three Emmy nominations, the 1986 Kennedy Center Honors, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the National Medal of Arts, and induction into the Rock, Jazz and Rhythm and Blues halls of fame, respectively. The poster (14 x 22 inches), printed on cardboard stock, has benefitted from minor professional restoration (replacement of the backing stock and repair to a number of small creases and tears) and has an Excellent to Mint appearance. This is a highly visual and rare vintage poster dating from the height of Ray Charles' epic career. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
