Jasper Johns is considered by many to be one of the most influential artists in American history. In the 1950s, he broke from the abstract expressionist style of the time and began creating works of art that emphasized his art-as-object philosophy. In his paintings of flags, targets, and maps, Johns also fostered curiosity by viewers into his creative process. In his own enigmatic words, "There may or may not be an idea, and the meaning may just be that the painting exists." He later became involved in a number of related fields, including printmaking, etching, and lithography. Offered is a signed limited-edition lithograph created by Johns in 1971 titled Coat Hanger and Spoon, from his "Fragments - According to What" series. Johns has signed and dated the piece in colored pencil along the lower right. Hand-numbered "38/76" in the lower left. 25 x 34 inches. The lithograph is in Near Mint condition and has been framed to total dimensions of 35 x 44 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
