1888 G11 Allen & Ginter "George Washington Album" Tobacco Banner

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,856.00

Stunning tobacco advertising poster issued in promotion of Allen & Ginter's George Washington Album. Few advertising posters of any type can compare with the patriotic flavor of this exceptional rarity. Distinguished by its exceptional graphics and bold color, this extremely rare poster features a large illustrated portrait image of George Washington in the center, surrounded by representations of five pages from the premium album then currently available from Allen & Ginter. Lettered along the top of the banner is the name of the album and the publisher, "Illustrations From The Washington Album - Published by Allen & Ginter, Richmond, Virginia." The names of the company's cigarette brands, "Straight Cut No. 1," "Virginia Brights" and "Pet Cigarettes," are displayed in the lower right. The lithographer's name appears in the lower left, "Lindnor, Eddy & Clauss, Lith. N.Y." Tobacco banners such as these were not issued to the public, and were distributed only to tobacco-store owners for store display. Because of this, despite their extraordinary display value and high-quality production, most were discarded immediately following the respective period of promotion. The few survivors are among nineteenth-century card collecting's rarest and most substantial treasures. This banner, catalogued G11 by Jefferson Burdick in the first American Card Catalog, is one of the most attractive of all nonsport tobacco banners and is of special note due to its very popular subject matter. This is one of the few tobacco posters ever issued to promote an album as opposed to a card set. (The George Washington album is catalogued A20 by Jefferson Burdick in the ACC.) The poster (20 x 28.75 inches) has a few minor tears and creases, including a small piece of tape repair in the top border, as well as a spot of "in-painting" in the upper right. The noted flaws, however, do not in the least detract from the poster's extraordinary visual appeal and overall Excellent appearance. Magnificent for display. Framed to total dimensions of 22 x 31 inches. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,856.00
