1910 E231 "The Game of the Yellow Kid" Complete Set (25)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
Catalogued E231 by Jefferson Burdick in the American Card Catalog, this striking card set issued in 1910 features the most famous character of renowned artist R. F. Outcault. The set includes twenty-five colorful lithographed cards (2.75 x 4-3/8) which together tell the story of the Yellow Kid's travels to Europe. Each card in this extremely colorful set was "Given Away With Each Piece of Adam's Yellow Kid Chewing Gum." Twenty-four of the twenty-five cards in this set each have a small piece of clear tape attached to both the top and bottom edges (from long ago being mounted in an album); the condition otherwise ranges from Vg to Ex (includes a few slightly lesser, but still Good or better, all very attractive cards). The reverse of each card has the title of the set ("The Game of the Yellow Kid") printed along the top and the rules for the game which can be played with the cards are printed beneath the title. The Yellow Kid was created by R. F. Outcault and initially appeared as the first successful comic strip character in the New York World newspaper on Feb. 17, 1895. Outcault, who had great marketing skills as well as artistic genius, immediately proceeded to license the Yellow Kid in various ad campaigns for many companies and products of the day. One of these early efforts was this set of trade cards issued with Adam's chewing gum. This very scarce issue is rarely offered as a complete set, and is highly prized by both comic and nonsport card collectors. Total 25 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
