1940 R145 Gum, Inc. "Superman" Complete Set PSA-Graded (72)

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $17,400.00

Presented is what may be the finest complete set of 1940 "Superman" bubble-gum cards ever assembled. This is also the only complete Superman set on the PSA registry. The PSA set registry GPA is 6.57. This ultra high-grade set has been assembled one card at a time by an extremely dedicated collector with an uncompromising commitment to condition and eye-appeal over a period of twenty-one years, actively seeking to upgrade this set during the entire span of his collecting. We have never seen a Superman set that even comes close to comparing with the extraordinary results of these great efforts. Advanced collectors are well aware that Superman cards are far more difficult to collect in high-grade than baseball cards of the era, in part because they are far rarer. Gum, Inc.'s 1940 "Superman" series is one of the most popular nonsport sets ever issued. Its outstanding color, detailed artwork, popular subject matter, and the exciting adventures presented on the backs, all contribute to making this set one of nonsport collecting's all-time classics. A complete set of Superman is rare in any condition, especially because of the extremely rare high-number series cards (#49-72). The entire set of seventy-two cards has been graded and encapsulated by PSA (with the exception of two cards which have been graded by SGC). Sixty cards range in grade from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt (including fourteen NM-MT 8, thirty-one NM 7, and fifteen EX-MT 6) and twelve cards are Ex and slightly lesser. The twenty-four high-number cards (#49-72) are particularly rare. Twenty of the twenty-four rare high-number cards grade Ex or better, two grade Vg-Ex, one Vg, and one Good. The complete PSA condition composite follows: Fourteen NM-MT 8: #3, 8 (OC), 10, 12, 21, 25, 28, 36, 37, 43, 44, 45, 46, and 47. Thirty-One NM 7: #4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 23, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 50, 51, 53, 56, 60, and 62. Fifteen EX-MT 6: #7, 20, 22, 24, 26, 30, 48, 52, 54, 57, 64, 65, 67, 68, and 69. Eight EX 5: #1 (SGC EX+ 70), 2, 55, 58, 61, 63, 66, and 72. Two VG-EX 4: #70 and 71. One VG 3: #49. One GOOD 2: #59. The set is accompanied by an original "Superman" Gum, Inc. wrapper, itself a significant rarity, which has always been considered one of wrapper collecting's greatest prizes. The wrapper is in Vg-Ex condition. The SMR value for just the PSA NM-MT 8s, NM 7s, EX-MT 6s, EX 5s, and VG-EX 4s in this set (not including the PSA VG 3s or GOOD 2) is $7,440, but we would be very surprised if the market did not value this set at a significant premium to SMR. Total 73 items (72 cards plus wrapper). Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$7,500+.
