Circa 1946 Kellogg's "Pep" Pin Set (86)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $580.00
Complete set of all eighty-six pins from the extremely popular Kellogg's "Pep" pin set. These colorful litho pins were issued as premiums in boxes of Kellogg's Pep Cereal in the 1940s. This is the premier character pin set of the era, featuring all the popular comic strip characters of the day, issued during an era in which comic characters had an even higher profile in popular culture than today. Each pin measures 3/4 inches in diameter and features a portrait image of a comic character or adventure hero, with an advertisement for Kellogg's "Pep" cereal on the reverse. Includes: Andy Gump, Barney Google, B. O. Plenty, Brenda Starr, Chester Gump, Cindy, Corky, Daddy Warbucks, Daisy, Dick Tracy, Don Winslow, Fat Stuff, Felix the Cat, Flash Gordon, Fritz, Harold Teen, Henry, Inspector, Jiggs, Judy, Junior Track, Kayo, Little King, Little Moose, Lord Plushbutton, Maggie, Mama Katzenjammer, Mamie, Min Gump, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Bibbs, Nina, Orphan Annie, Pat Patten, Perry Winkle, Pop Jenks, Rip Winkle, Sandy, Shadow, Smilin' Jack, Smitty, Smokey Stover, Superman, Tess Trueheart, The Phantom, Tillie the Toiler, Tiny Tim, Toots, Uncle Avery, Uncle Walt, Uncle Willie, Vitamin Flintheart, Wilmer, Wimpy, Winnie Twins, Winnie Winkle, and many more. Kelloggs "Pep" pins tend to survive in rough shape, as they are litho buttons, which are far more susceptible to damage than celluloid buttons. (Litho pins have their designs printed directly onto metal, and can therefore be very easily scratched, as opposed to celluloid buttons, which have designs printed on paper that is then protected by a celluloid covering.) This is a very carefully assembled set comprised of pins far nicer than usually found for this issue, with just a handful having a tiny pinpoint scratch or some minor surface wear. The set presents in Excellent condition overall. Kellogg's "Pep" pins are rarely offered as a complete set, and are highly prized by pinback collectors, comic collectors, and prewar nonsport collectors. Total 86 pins. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $580.00
