1962 Topps "Civil War News" Original Card Artwork #50
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,972.00
Original 1962 Topps "Civil War News" card artwork (5.25 x 3.75 inches). This painting was used to produce card #50, entitled "Stolen Secrets," from this extremely popular set which chronicles the rich history of the Civil War. The artwork depicts Pauline Cushman, a brave female spy, stealing secret paperwork from a Confederate general's office. The artwork is extraordinary, with magnificent colors and many elaborate details, including a pen and quill on the desk, and even a battle map drawn on the paper she is stealing. Pauline Cushman was caught in the act by a guard, whose shadow can be seen on the window shade in the background. It is hard not to appreciate the incredible effort invested in the "Civil War News" artwork, and easy to see why this set is revered as among the finest ever produced due to the unrivaled quality of its paintings. The original artwork includes additional image area which was cropped out by Topps on the issued card. While all "Civil War News" card artwork is traditionally attributed to Norm Saunders, the research of Norm Saunders' son, David, an expert and scholar regarding his father's work, reveals that many cards in the set, including this one, are actually a collaborative effort by Norm Saunders and fellow Topps staff artist Maurice Blumenthal. The artwork is in Near Mint condition and is accompanied by an example of the issued card. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
