1962 Topps "Mars Attacks" Original Artwork #5 "Washington In Flames"
Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $29,000.00
Presented is the original painting to one of the most exciting and shocking of all 1962 Topps "Mars Attacks" artworks: card #5, entitled "Washington In Flames," which literally captures the carnage and destruction of Washington, D.C., by the invaders from space. For many collectors and historians, no single card better represents the horror and fears of the world created by the "Mars Attacks" set than the fall of the nation's capital as illustrated in this horrifying painting. It is little wonder that parents were in such an outrage over the "Mars Attacks" set. Fiery deaths, explosions, and people being frozen alive on other cards were bad enough, but the destruction of our nation's capital hit far closer to home than patriotic adults were willing to tolerate. There was a limit, and this card, as well as the horrifying realism of the story of destruction told by the entire set, stepped way over the line. Any original "Mars Attacks" artwork is an incredible find, but this example is one of the best, most shocking, and most memorable of the series. In this scene, the Martians' saucers are releasing death rays and destroying the Capitol Building and many other landmarks in Washington, D.C. The back of the card reads in part: Frightening rumors had reached some of the cities that the White House was in flames, after being battered by the Martian saucers. Such famous landmarks as the Washington Monument had been completely destroyed. Fleeing citizens reported the entire city in flames. The Martians did not spare anyone from their vicious death rays and fear for the president's welfare continued to grow by the hour. The painting is the work of the legendary Norm Saunders. Original "Mars Attacks" artworks are, of course, extremely rare. Auction records for "Mars Attacks" artworks exceed $20,000. Theoretically all exist, but only a few examples have ever come to the marketplace over the years. The offered example has been never before been offered and has been locked away in a major collection for decades. It is a special privilege to be able to offer any original "Mars Attacks" artwork, but all the more so to offer such a tremendous and prime example, which so effectively represents and captures the spirit of the set. The artwork (5.5 x 3.75 inches) is in Near Mint to Mint condition. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000. SOLD FOR $29,000.00
