1912 T207 Brown Background Near-Complete Set (181 of 200)
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $26,100.00
Near-complete set of 1912 T207 brown background cards includes 181 of the 200 cards in the set, plus three variations for a total 184 different cards. 78% range in grade from Vg-Ex to Ex (includes some Ex-Mt), 16% Vg, and 6% lesser (includes several which appear Ex but may have a very slight trim). Missing only the following nineteen cards for completion: Adams, Bauman, Blackburne, Carrigan, Donnelly, Irving Lewis, Lowdermilk, McKechnie, Miller/Bklyn, Miller/Chicago, Morgan/Wash, Pelty, Snodgrass, Stovall, Tyler, Vaughn, White, Wood, and Works. This is a particularly strong near-complete set, especially for T207 which is so prone to surface cracking and creasing. The set was very carefully assembled one card at a time over a period of years by a very patient and dedicated collector who specialized in only collecting T207s. The T207 set includes many rare cards and has always been extremely challenging to complete. The set includes a high concentration of obscure players and is also highlighted by a selection of Hall of Famers including Tris Speaker, Walter Johnson, Frank Chance, and Harry Hooper. We have selected sixteen cards to be encapsulated and graded by SGC. In the following condition composite, identifying card numbers are referenced from the numbers provided by the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. Keys: #3 Almeida (SGC EX 60), 10 Bender (Vg-Ex), 19 Bresnahan (Ex), 25 Carey (SGC VG 40), 28 Chance (SGC VG/EX 50), 29 Cicotte (slight trim, otherwise Vg), 36 Cunningham (SGC EX/NM 80), 81 Hooper (SGC VG/EX 50), 82 Houser (SGC EX/NM 80), 84 Johnson (SGC VG/EX 50), 104a Livingston/"A" on shirt (SGC VG 40), 104b Livingston/big "C" (Gd), 108 Marquard (SGC EX 60), 109 Marsans (80/20 T/B otherwise Vg to Vg-Ex), 113 McGraw (SGC VG/EX 50), 130 Moriarty (SGC EX/NM 80), 147 Ragan (slight trim otherwise Vg-Ex/EX), 148 Rasmussen (SGC EX 60), 152 Ryan (Vg), 153 Saier (SGC VG/EX 50), 164 Speaker (SGC VG/EX 50), 177 Tinker (Vg), 184 Wallace (80/20 T/B otherwise Vg), 186 Weaver (SGC GOOD 30), 187 Wheat (SGC VG/EX 50). Twelve cards have the rare red Cycle backs, eighteen cards have the rare Broadleaf advertising backs, and five have no advertising on their reverses. The rare backs (Cycle, Broadleaf, and no advertising) are almost always associated with the rarer cards in the T207 set. This is an exceptionally attractive near-set complete set, appearing at a glance far stronger than suggested by the very respectable and technically accurate grades listed above. The tremendous percentage of rare cards in the T207 set makes this issue one of the most difficult to complete of all 1910-era tobacco card sets. This is an exceptionally strong and extremely attractive near-complete set of this classic and often overlooked tobacco card issue. Total 184 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000.
