1914 Boston Garter Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $34,800.00

Presented is the key Hall of Famer from the extremely rare ten-card 1914 Boston Garter series: Christy Mathewson. This is, of course, one of Christy Mathewson's rarest cards. In fact, we're not sure we've ever seen this extraordinary rarity offered before. According to the reverse advertising, this card was issued free to retailers only, and were intended specifically for the retailer to "Display the Pictures of these Ball Players in Your Window." In recent years collectors have shown a growing appreciation for the mystique of the rarest vintage card issues. Boston Garters certainly fall into this category, and have always been appreciated but are rarely offered. Boston Garter sets were issued in 1912, 1913, and 1914. It is unlikely that more than a total of one hundred Boston Garter cards exist from all three years of issue. The checklist on the back of the card lists ten cards to the set. Like the earlier sets issued by Boston Garter, as noted on the reverse, these cards were also issued one per box of twelve Boston-brand garters. The 1914 Boston Garters measure approximately 6.25 x 3.75 inches and are printed in green or sepia tones. This Mathewson card is printed in green tone. The text of the reverse, like all other 1914 Boston Garters, appears to have a line of text missing at the top. This is as made and due to the method of their issue. The cards were not issued in vertical strips (as is evidenced by the same reverse text flaw on all 1914 Boston Garters), but when issued the cards were apparently attached to the Boston Garters packaging and had to be removed. This card has an ideal original rough cut tear as intended, with a large full border at top (all other examples we have seen have apparently been cut with scissors at the top). This card is a recent discovery, and was found tucked in a scrapbook album of old baseball clippings. It was the only card in the book. It is just by chance that Mathewson is the key Hall of Famer in the set. Included was also a clipping of Mathewson in the same pose as he appears on the card, and which accompanies the card. The card is extremely bright and clean, both front and back. There are a few very minor light creases, most easily seen in the lower left corner, and all visible only upon extremely close inspection. The insignificant creases allow a technical grade of only Vg-Ex but the card certainly displays as Excellent. This is a very attractive and significant card of the legendary Christy Mathewson from one of the rarest baseball card sets of the era. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $34,800.00
