Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,190.00
ADDENDUM: Please note: The large format Walter Johnson example featured in this lot was matted. The piece also exhibits two vertical tears along the top border, one of which extends into the photo area.
Collection of 121 Baseball Magazine premiums (118 M113 smaller size and three M114 larger size) highlighted by fifty-one Hall of Famers including Ruth, Gehrig, Ott, Hornsby, Baker, Dean, Grove, Traynor, Crawford, Johnson, Cochrane, Waner, Cronin, etc. After its 1908 debut, Baseball Magazine began producing a long-running series of player posters printed on high quality paper stock which were offered as premiums to readers. These premiums feature mostly action poses of baseball stars and were issued from the teens all the way through the 1940s. They range in size from approximately 9 x 12.25 inches to 9 x 20 inches. The sepia-toned premiums feature photos taken by legendary sports photographer Charles Conlon. In the lower margin of each premium is the player's name, copyright information, and promotion for the magazine. Because of their thin stock, these premiums are easily damaged. This is a very strong group in terms of condition for Baseball Magazine premiums, ranging in grade from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt-Mt, averaging Ex-Mt overall (Ruth and Gehrig are Nr/Mt-Mt). Also included are three 1931 Blum's Baseball Bulletin Premiums: Lajoie, Speaker, and Evers (each with two small stains on the edges, otherwise in Excellent condition). This is a tremendous collection of Baseball Magazine premiums, with an extremely high concentration of Hall of Famers. Total 124 premiums (121 Baseball Magazine and 3 Blum's Baseball Bulletin). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
