1886 "Black Stocking Nine" Women's Baseball Cabinet Card Collection (6)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,972.00
Collection of six nineteenth-century cabinet cards comprised exclusively of women ballplayers, including four issued as premiums by tobacco companies. Each of these six cabinet photos pictures women ballplayers posing in uniform. 1-2) Two of the six cabinets are gigantic, much larger than a traditional cabinet card, measuring an astounding 7.5 x 13 inches. Each features the advertisement for "Virginia Brights Cigarettes," a very early Allen & Ginter's cigarette brand. Both are dated 1886 (in the photo) and feature images from the "Black Stocking Nine" series, which is identified by name on the mount along with advertising. We have never seen these cards in this size. It is possible that these oversized cabinet cards were actually produced for store display. One has a black mount and one has a traditional cream-colored mount. Both are designed with red trim along their beveled edges. The black-mount card has long ago snapped into two pieces, separated along a horizontal break above the woman ballplayer. There is no paper loss, and the two pieces fit together perfectly, easily allowing for ideal display. A restorer could permanently reassemble if desired. The other oversized cabinet has a very small pinhole at the very top and bottom center, and some light foxing (most easily seen on the blank reverse); it is otherwise in about Excellent condition. 3) The third "Black Stocking Nine" cabinet is a traditional cabinet style card but appears to have a very slight trim. The cabinet card is accompanied by N508 Sub Rosa Cigarettes card featuring the same image as the cabinet card (Vg). 4) "Black Stocking Nine" cabinet with an advertisement for "Dixie Cigarettes," another Allen & Ginter's cigarette brand. Vg-Ex. 5-6) Two circa 1888 high-quality generic cabinet card photos: One pictures a woman ballplayer in uniform (identified as "Lena Skelly" in pencil on reverse) with advertising for Minner Photographic Studios of Sparta, Illinois, on the mount. The second cabinet card features a group of women in dresses, with one woman holding a bat with her eye on the ball. Both are Ex. This is a fascinating collection of cabinet photos featuring women playing the game of baseball during the nineteenth century. Also included are nine magazines entitled Official National Girls Baseball League Magazine dating from 1950. Each magazine has a different cover featuring women baseball players. Total 6 cabinets (plus one small tobacco card and nine magazines). Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,972.00
