1887-1889 N172 Old Judge Collection (11)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,640.00

Auction Description Addendum: Please note that the card of "Gleason" in this lot is misidentified in the printed catalog as William J. "Kid" Gleason, but is actually a card of William G. Gleason, who shares a very similar name and also played for Philadelphia. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Exceptionally high-quality group of eleven N172 Old Judges in Excellent condition (two cards might be slightly less): Blair (Hamilton, rare team, card is slightly narrow but we believe as made), T. Burns (Chicago), Fagan (KC), B. Gleason (Athletics), A. Irwin (Philadelphia), D. Mahoney (St. Joseph), Nicholl (St. Louis "Brown's Champions 1886" with very slight miscut bottom border and a few very light surface scratches in lower right), T. O'Neill (St. Louis), Porter (KC), Sutton (Boston) and A. Whitney (NY, calling dog to right, off-camera). This collection includes a particularly high concentration of noteworthy players, such as Tip O'Neill, as well as a portrait "Brownie Champ" sample. Each of these cards exhibits a clean blank reverse with no glue residue or pencil marks. This collection of N172 Old Judges was very carefully assembled by an advanced collector in the 1980s as a representative group, and was assembled one card at a time, with a primary concern for contrast and the overall eye-appeal of each card. This is an extremely attractive group of these nineteenth-century classics. Total 11 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $4,640.00
