1975 Hostess Giant Assortment of 559 Unassembled Complete Boxes
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
In 1975 Hostess issued this landmark set of 150 cards on the bottom of boxes of Hostess snack cake products, with one three-card panel appearing on the bottom of each box. The set was sensationally successful, and collectors all over the country were seen stocking up on Hostess products. The cards were only supposed to be available at stores on the bottom of boxes containing cakes (that was the whole point-you were supposed to buy the product to get the cards), but somehow some complete unassembled boxes escaped, probably as samples directly from the printer or someone at Hostess. In 1975, Charles Brooks (an old-time hobby dealer who founded the collector's publication The Sports Hobbyist in the 1960s) purchased a huge quantity of extra unassembled 1975 Hostess boxes direct from Hostess, but those boxes consisted of only about a dozen different boxes. Almost all unassembled 1975 Hostess boxes in the world feature those same few panels and originate from that truckload direct purchase. The distribution of this group is completely different. This giant hoard of 559 complete boxes includes twenty-eight different boxes (of the fifty different boxes comprising the complete set), representing eighty-four different cards (of the 150 to complete the set). Being unassembled, these boxes were obviously saved by someone at Hostess or by the printer. Each box (559 assorted) has one three-card panel, for a total of 1,677 cards. The assortment includes many Hall of Famers and stars (number in parentheses indicates the quantity of each player): Sutton (5), Evans (3), McCovey (1), Brock (3), Luzinski (3), Rose (8), Matthews (4), Rudi (3), Harrelson (3), Yaz (8), Fingers (2), Carew (68), Ryan (16), Carlton (81), Cardenal (33), Lopes (74), Torre (73), Seaver (73), Colbert (57), Yount (14), Tiant (3), Hargrove (1), Kaat (1), Schmidt (2), Munson (8), Murcer (9), Bonds (1), Hunter (2). The complete boxes range from Nr/Mt to Mint condition. The cards are all in Mint condition. The recent introduction of grading of handcut panels by PSA is just beginning to have a significant effect. Although there are no guarantees with reference to grading, it would be hard to imagine that these boxes do not include a generous supply of panels with the potential for grading PSA 10. The Standard Catalog book value (in panel format) for this assortment is $3,411. Total 559 complete unassembled boxes. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
