1892 Albert Spalding Signed Letter
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $3,190.00
One-page typed letter signed by Albert Goodwill Spalding, former player, influential team owner, and sporting-goods magnate. The letter, dated October 20, 1892, is written on A. G. Spalding & Bros. company letterhead to the H. B. Wright & Co., and finds Spalding concerned not with baseball equipment, but with tires. He writes in full: "Gentlemen:- Yours of October 19th received. Last year and year before we made some exchanges with men who always rode Victors, at $35 difference, taking their old Wheel back. What we will do next year is still a conundrum as the demands for pneumatics seem to be increasing. When we make an exchange of this kind we get full profit on the first sale. We could not think of selling a man a Wheel at wholesale and then exchanging it at that price the next season. There would not be much business in that. Yours very truly, A. G. Spalding [signed]." Spalding's signature has been beautifully penned in black fountain pen, grading "8+." The letter (8.25 x 10.75 inches) has normal mailing folds and is in Excellent condition. The A. G. Spalding & Co. stationery makes this letter particularly impressive for display. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200.
