1911 Morgan Bulkeley Signed Check
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
Bank check signed by Morgan Bulkeley (1837-1922), first President of the National League. The check, drawn on The Riggs National Bank, is dated February 7, 1911 and made out to the Castalia Spring Water Co. in the amount of $12. It is flawlessly signed "M. G. Bulkeley" in black fountain pen ("10"). In 1876, when the National League was formed, Bulkeley was elected unanimously as its first president. Bulkeley was previously the president of the Hartford Dark Blues of the National Association. In the league's inaugural season, Bulkeley greatly enhanced the game's image by reducing gambling and drinking, but after one season he left baseball to pursue his interests in business, as president of the Aetna Insurance Company, and politics, eventually serving two terms as Mayor of Hartford, four years as Governor of Connecticut (1889-93), and six years as Senator (1905-1911). Bulkeley was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1937. Bank checks are an extremely popular area for collecting Hall of Famer signatures, and Bulkeley checks are extremely rare. The check (7.75 x 3 inches) has two very light vertical folds and normal bank cancellation stamps and marks; it is otherwise in Near Mint condition. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
