1919 John H. (Honus) Wagner Signed Check
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,160.00
Extremely rare large-format full canceled Honus Wagner check in the amount of $43.96 is drawn on The First National Bank of Carnegie and dated Feb. 10, 1919. The check is made payable to "Charles Beckel" (endorsed on the reverse in pencil by Charles Beckel) and is beautifully signed in black fountain pen, "John H. Wagner" ("9"). The normal bank cancellation marks are stamped over the "John H. W" of the signature, which does not in the least affect the integrity and extremely strong, bold legibility of the signature. This is a particularly attractive Honus Wagner check, with a striking vignette and identification in bright red lettering of Wagner's hometown Carnegie National Bank. This is also a very early Wagner check, dating from the second year following his retirement as a player. Wagner checks are far rarer than Cobb or even Ruth checks, with just a small number discovered and released by the family in relatively recent years. Decades ago, Cobb and Ruth checks were available in far greater quantities, literally by the hundreds, and they have been easily absorbed by the marketplace, suggesting a very bright future in the years to come for the few Wagner checks circulating. Solid Ex-Mt condition. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
