Circa 1925 Babe Ruth Signed Photo with Corbett and Governor of Washington
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $2,610.00
Signed during the height of Ruth's playing career, this photo captures the "Babe" posing on the street with Roland Hartley, Governor of Washington, former heavyweight boxing champion James J. Corbett, and Nick Pierong, manager of the Pantages Theatre in Spokane, WA. Ruth has signed the photo in blue fountain pen atop his image, and Hartley has also signed "Roland Hartley - Governor of Washington" in black fountain pen on the bottom border beneath his image. Ruth's signature is boldly penned, grading a strong "9," and remains quite legible, even against the dark background of his overcoat. Hartley's signature grades "8/9." Roland Hartley was Governor of Washington from 1925 to 1933. That knowledge, combined with the fact that Ruth has signed his name with "Babe" in quotation marks (he discontinued that practice around 1927) helps to date the signing of this photo to the mid 1920s. The photo (9 x 7.75 inches) is in Fair condition, with paper loss along the left border, numerous heavy creases throughout, some with cracking to the surface, small tears, and clear tape repair. The photograph has been mounted to a white cardboard backing for reinforcement. Still, this is an impressive and unique image of significance, with outstanding contrast. Despite the many obvious condition flaws, Ruth's signature remains largely unaffected. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
