LOT WITHDRAWN: Unique 1928 Babe Ruth Signed Vincent Alascia Original Artwork

Starting Bid - $50.00, Sold For -

THIS LOT HAS BEEN WITHDRAWN FROM THE AUCTION.

This unique Babe Ruth signed artwork dates from the 1928 season and is being offered to the collecting community directly from the family of artist Vincent Alascia. The artwork, done in the style of a newspaper cartoon, pictures a beautiful bust-length image of Ruth in the center, surrounded by small vignettes and anecdotes regarding his career. Ruth has signed the piece in bold black fountain pen with the signature grading "10." The offered artwork, which is executed in pen and ink on paper, was created by Vincent Alascia and is signed and dated by the artist just above Ruth's signature. This piece, as attractive as it is, was never published and is heretofore unseen. The reason for that is that Vincent Alascia was just fourteen years old at the time he drew this. Nevertheless, his talent, even at that age, is readily apparent and it is no surprise that he went on to become a professional illustrator of great note in the comic industry. During his long career Alascia worked on a number of important titles including Captain Marvel, The Human Torch and Captain America, to name just a few. This piece has remained a treasured keepsake in the Alascia family for over seventy-seven years and is being consigned directly by his granddaughter, to whom Alascia has inscribed the piece on the reverse of the frame. It is accompanied by a newspaper article from the October 9, 1977 issue of the Bridgeport Sunday Post in which Alascia is pictured holding this very artwork. Included within the article is the firsthand account of how Ruth came to sign this piece during Alascia's visit to Yankee Stadium in 1928. All Ruth signed items, of course, are highly prized by collectors. However, the unique nature of this particular piece, its extraordinary display value, and its impeccable provenance combine to make this a truly exceptional find in the field of Ruth signed collectibles. The artwork (13.5 x 10.5 inches) displays a few minor tears and creases along the border areas and has long ago been laminated for preservation. Excellent overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 17.5 x 14.5 inches. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $0. Estimate $0/$0. SOLD FOR
