1950 Signed News Photo Including Jackie Robinson and Duke Snider
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,392.00
Original 8 x 10 game-in-action news photo, dating from July 10, 1950, signed in blue ink by five of the seven individuals pictured: Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Milt Stock (coach), Larry Goetz (umpire), and Frank Dascoli (home plate umpire). The photo, taken at a game between the Dodgers and Phillies at Ebbets Field, captures the start of what looks to be a classic baseball "rhubarb." Jackie Robinson stands calmly at the plate as he watches catcher Andy Seminick and third baseman Willie "Puddin'head" Jones charge towards home plate umpire Frank Dascoli. Also looking on are Dodgers third base coach Milt Stock, base umpire Larry Goetz, and Duke Snider, who is standing on third base. Robinson, Snider, Stock, Goetz and Dascoli have all signed the photo in blue ink next to their respective images. All are strong, grading "8/9," with the key Robinson signature even stronger, grading "9/10." The credit stamp of photographer Barney Stein appears on the reverse, as does the handwritten notations "New York Post Staff Photo" and "For Seminick." It is very likely that this original print was made as a gift for catcher Andy Seminick. Although the photo is undated, Milt Stock only coached with the Dodgers in 1949 and 1950. Our research of The New York Times archives over that span indicates that the scenario pictured here occurred on exactly July 10, 1950, during the Dodgers 7-3 win over the eventual pennant winners. This is an exciting photograph, ideal for display, with tremendous action and an artistic composition. The photo has a few very light, unobtrusive creases (visible when viewed at proper angles), with perfect contrast and Excellent appearance. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,392.00
