Circa 1950 Jackie Robinson Single-Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,508.00
Cambridge "Official League" baseball signed by Jackie Robinson in blue ink on a side panel. Robinson's signature ("6") was originally prefaced by a personalization; however, the name of the original recipient has been removed, leaving only the words "To" and "From" (both in Robinson's hand) still legible above his name. Apparently the original recipient did not want his or her name on the ball when parting with it long ago. This is a particularly interesting ball as it has an elaborate red-ink stamp advertising on a side panel for "Sunset Appliance Stores, Inc." It is well known that in his early years in the Majors, in the off-season Jackie Robinson held a job selling televisions and appliances at a retail store to make ends meet. This was not uncommon in this era, before ballplayers routinely earned big money. While we have not been able to find a record of the name of the store at which Robinson worked, this ball was very likely signed as part of a promotional event for "Sunset Appliance Stores, Inc." and it is possible that "Sunset Appliance Stores, Inc." was the store at which Robinson worked. While much of the stamping (listing the company's address and phone number) is quite faded, the name of the company, "Sunset Appliance Stores, Inc.," remains very clearly legible. This is a very unusual, possibly unique single-signed baseball relating to Jackie Robinson's "other" less noteworthy career as an appliance salesman. A slight diagonal surface scratch transverses Robinson's first name but does not significantly detract from its overall visual appeal. Despite his legendary status and accommodating nature with regard to autographs, vintage Jackie Robinson single-signed balls are particularly rare. All of the original manufacturer's stampings remain bold and legible and the ball is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,508.00
