Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson Signed Checks (2)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,160.00
Pair of checks signed, respectively, by Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey, the two men who together were responsible for breaking the color barrier in organized baseball in 1946. Branch Rickey checks are extremely rare. We estimate that fewer than fifty Rickey checks are known to exist, which is a very modest number for such an important and popular type of signed item. 1) Jackie Robinson Bank Check: the check, dated August 18, 1971 and drawn on the Freedom National Bank of New York, is made out to "Cash" in the amount of $20 and has been signed by "Jack R. Robinson" in blue ink ("10"). The check (8.25 x 3 inches) has three light vertical folds and a diagonal crease in the lower left corner, as well as normal bank cancellation stamps. Vg-Ex. 2) Branch Rickey Personal Check: the check, dated September 1, 1964 and drawn on the Mercantile Trust Company of St. Louis, is made out to "The University Club" in the amount of $35 and has been signed by "Branch Rickey" in black ink ("8"). The check (8 x 3 inches) has a single vertical fold and normal bank cancellation stamps and holes. The check is in Excellent condition. Rickey and Robinson will forever be linked together in baseball history due to their courageous battle against and victory over the overt discrimination practiced by organized baseball prior to 1946. Together, the two weathered the storm of public protest to achieve a measure of equality to set the stage for the future and promote the spread of civil rights within our society as a whole. This is an outstanding pair of signed checks that would be perfect for display together. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Total: 2 checks. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
