Mickey Mantle Signed Original Painting

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,624.00

Original oil on canvas painting of Mickey Mantle, by noted sports artist Wayne Prokopiak, signed by Mantle in blue Sharpie. The large bust-length image of "The Mick" been beautifully inscribed "Best Wishes - Mickey Mantle - No. 7." Mantle's signature and inscription contrasts exceptionally well against the light background and grades "10." It should be noted that this artwork was specially commissioned by our consignor and was then later signed by Mantle in his presence. According to our consignor, Mantle was quite taken with this painting and remarked that it was the finest artistic representation of himself that he had ever seen. While Mantle may not have been an art connoisseur, he was certainly right in his opinion of this painting; it is magnificent. Signed and dated (1990) by the artist in the lower right. Wayne Prokopiak, who has created many memorable sports lithographs, is best known today for his work with the Boxing Hall of Fame. Prokopiak was the official artist for the Hall during the 1990s and was annually commissioned to create the cover illustrations for its Hall of Fame induction programs. During that period he also developed a close working relationship with our consignor, who commissioned Prokopiak to produce a number of significant baseball artworks for his substantial personal collection. The offered piece is one the finest of those specially commissioned works. The painting measures 13 x 16 inches and has been attractively framed to slightly larger dimensions. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,624.00
