1887-1889 N172 Old Judge Hall of Famer Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $5,220.00

Exceptionally attractive collection of five high-quality N172 Old Judges, featuring four Hall of Famers and the legendary Dummy Hoy, all with strong fronts ranging from Vg to Ex-Mt condition, but with various back damage flaws which are so commonly found with Old Judges (ink notations or remnants of scrapbook removal). Each has been harshly graded by SGC (each graded less than Good) exclusively due to flaws on the backs: 1) Buck Ewing (fielding grounder, Ewing C., New Yorks - SGC FAIR 20). Without reference to minor surface paper loss on reverse this card would grade solid EX. 2) Sliding Billy Hamilton (fielding, hands above waist - SGC POOR 10). Without reference to ink notations and small stain on reverse, this card would grade Vg-Ex. Outstanding contrast. 3) Dummy Hoy (bat at side - SGC FAIR 20). Without reference to surface paper loss from tape removal on reverse, this card would grade Ex. 4) Sam Thompson (arms folded, Detroit - SGC POOR 10). No creases, superb contrast. Without reference to surface paper loss and soiling on reverse, this card would grade Vg due to rounded corners. 5) Smiling Mickey Welch (ball in hands above waist - SGC POOR 10). Without reference to ink notations on reverse, as well as a crease visible only on the reverse, this card grades Vg-Ex/Ex (falling shy of Ex due to just a hint too much corner wear). This is an extremely impressive and very clean collection of N172 Old Judges with tremendous eye appeal. These cards represent an extraordinary opportunity to potentially acquire an exceptional group of key Old Judges at a fraction of what such attractive examples would sell for without the reverse imperfections which have so severely impacted their SGC grades. These are five great-looking cards! Total 5 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $5,220.00
