1950s "Dodger Beverage" Advertising Display Signed by 56 Former Brooklyn Dodgers
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,044.00
Standing at a height of over five feet, this original 1950s die-cut tin advertising sign for "A Dodger Beverage," which once proudly advertised this Brooklyn brand in retail establishments, has been signed by fifty-six former members of baseball's beloved "Bums." All of the signatures have been penned in either blue or black Sharpie, with all but two of the players (Lasorda and Sandlock) also having added notations reflecting the years in which they played in Brooklyn. The concept for this piece and the assembly of these signatures was long ago a labor of love for many years for an extremely advanced Brooklyn Dodgers collector who was very active in the 1980s and early 1990s. While we are not publishing the consignor's name in this description, many collectors who are still active from those days will recall seeing this gentleman lugging his gigantic tin "Dodger Beverage" advertising display from and to his car, from show to show to get signed. That was a sight that is not easy to forget. The signatures gracing the front of this attractive advertising display are those of Sandy Koufax, Duke Snider, Don Drysdale, Tom Lasorda, Pee Wee Reese, Mickey Owen, Al Gionfriddo, Cy Buker, Gene Hermanski, Mike Sandlock, George Shuba, Clyde King, Ed Albosta, Vic Lombardi, Rod Dedeaux, Cal McLish, Johnny Podres, Don Newcombe, Bobby Bragan, Ralph Branca, Phil Haugstad, Dick Teed, Ed Stevens, Eddie Miksis, Joe Black, Ken Johnson, Cal Abrams, Ben Wade, Don Elston, Chico Fernandez, Russ Meyer, Bob Milliken, Buddy Hassett, Tommy Holmes, Boyd Bartley, Andy Pafko, Ransom Jackson, Danny McDevitt, Carmen Mauro, Bobby Morgan, John Rutherford, Jim Gentile, Clem Labine, Paul Minner, Don Zimmer, Spider Jorgensen, Gino Cimoli, Carl Erskine, Preacher Roe, Luis Olmo, Joe Pignatano, Elmer Valo, Don Demeter, Herman Franks, Bill Harris, and Bob Borkowski. It should be emphasized that this display sign is a valuable collectible in its own right. The addition of the signatures (many of which belong to players now deceased), however, makes this certainly one of the most unique and spectacular Brooklyn Dodgers signed display items we have ever seen. Approximately eight of the signatures (none of the Hall of Famers) are somewhat light, averaging "4/5." The remainder are all quite strong, ranging from "8" to "10." The display (65.5 inches) remains in Excellent condition and is accompanied by a metal platform which allows it to stand freely. Please note: due to the size of this item, the shipping charges for this lot (depending on where it is sent and method of shipping) may be substantial. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
