1934 Signed Tour of Japan Photo Including Ruth and Gehrig

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $16,240.00

Original black and white photo, capturing twenty-three members of Connie Mack's 1934 All-Star tour team, signed in black ink (ranging in grade from "5-9") by sixteen of the players pictured: Babe Ruth ("7/8"), Lou Gehrig ("8"), Lefty Gomez, Jimmie Foxx, Charlie Gehringer, Connie Mack, Earl Averill, Moe Berg, Bing Miller, Rabbit Warstler (blue ink), Frank O'Doul, Joe Cascarella (last name only), Frankie Hayes, Eric McNair, Earl Whitehill and Doc Ebbing. The photo pictures the players in street clothes as they pose together onboard their ocean liner and was most likely taken upon their arrival at one of the tour stops. This photo, in fact, was removed from a special presentation album given to each player on the tour, and once belonged to one of the players (though we are not certain which player). The 1934 tour of Japan and other Far East countries remains one of the most famous overseas baseball tours on record due to the fact that it was the only overseas tour Babe Ruth ever participated in. Also adding to the mystique of the tour was the presence of Moe Berg on the roster. Berg was a light hitting catcher and his inclusion on the team was not at the behest of Connie Mack, but rather of the U.S. Government. Unknown to all at the time, Berg was actually on a spying mission for the government and returned to the U.S. with numerous photos and movies of Japan's major cities including Tokyo. Those photos were later used during World War II and were especially important to the success of Doolittle's raid. The photo (9.75 x 7.5 inches) has flawless contrast, with a few light creases, some light foxing and a few tiny edge tears along the border, and a tiny chip in the upper left corner. A few minor mounting remnants from the Tour presentation album page from which it was removed appear on the reverse. None of these minor flaws significantly affects any of the signatures or the outstanding display value of this extremely historic signed photograph, which is in overall Very Good condition. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad, Mike Gutierrez & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000+. SOLD FOR $16,240.00
