1890 N172 Old Judge Charles Comiskey, Chicago (Players League)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $8,120.00

Graded EX 60 by SGC. Presented is one of N172 Old Judge's greatest rarities: the 1890 Players League designation card featuring the legendary Charles Comiskey with Chicago of the short-lived Players League. All 1890 Players League cards are extremely rare. Charles Comiskey is one of only several 1890 Old Judge "Players League" Hall of Famers known. This is a very attractive card, clean and crisp, with just a hint of wear to the four square corners. This is the first example of this card we have ever offered, and we believe this is also the only graded example of this significant rarity. (Because the PSA and SGC population reports do not provide pose and team detail, it is impossible for us to be certain that another example has not been graded, but we have never seen another). In addition to its extreme rarity, high grade, and the fact that this card features one of the key Hall of Famers of the Players League, this card is all the more noteworthy due to its extraordinary photo contrast. 1890 Old Judge cards are notorious for having extremely poor photo contrast. This example of Charles Comiskey is an exception, featuring a relatively strong image which is the best we have ever seen on an 1890 N172 Old Judge. After leading St. Louis to three consecutive Worlds Championships (1886, 1887, and 1888), Comiskey was one of the great stars of the game who jumped to the renegade Players League. When the Players League folded after a single season, Comiskey returned to St. Louis of the American Association in 1891. This is a very significant and extremely rare Old Judge of "The Old Roman" as a player, issued during one of nineteenth-century baseball's most turbulent periods, featuring him with Chicago of the Players League. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $8,120.00
