1857 Porter's Spirit of the Times (Earliest Engraving of an Actual Game)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,044.00
The September 12, 1857 issue of Porter's Spirit of the Times has a special historical significance as it features the earliest published woodcut engraving of a specific baseball game in progress on its cover. The game was a match between the Eagles and Gothams at the Elysian Fields in Hoboken. This would be the first of many images of famous matches to appear in Porter's as well as countless other papers and books. The three-tiered caption below the engraving reads "Drawn And Engraved Expressly For "Porter's Spirit of the Times." - Base Ball In America - The Eagles and Gothams Playing Their Great Match At The Elysian Fields, On Tuesday, September 8th." The interior article notes that the Eagles won the game by a score of 15 to 9, adding that "The Eagles won the toss and took the bat. They soon evinced a marked superiority over the Gothamites and carried off the laurels." Porter's was one of the first papers to cover all of the most important baseball matches and played a very significant role in popularizing the game in its earliest days. This is the complete paper (16 pages). Dimensions: 11 x 16 inches. Very few examples have survived, let alone in this extraordinary condition. Some very minor separation along the spine, otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $300/$500. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
