Circa 1870 Baseball

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $4,350.00

Tightly stitched professionally manufactured figure-eight baseball dating from circa 1870. This is an extraordinary top-quality baseball from the dawn of professional baseball. This ball has the unique provenance of originating from the well-known find of Lehigh University trophy balls, all of which were the same style, and all of which dated from 1871. The ball, which measures nine and one-eighths in circumference, displays a soft, well-worn leather cover, with minor surface abrasions and areas of light discoloration. Early nineteenth-century baseballs of this quality are rare and often difficult to date with precise accuracy. This ball is not only a fine representative example from the era, but one that can be narrowly dated to the very early 1870s. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $4,350.00
