1868 The Game of Baseball by Henry Chadwick
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $4,640.00
Englishman Henry Chadwick was the preeminent American sportswriter of the nineteenth century. In 1868 he wrote this 180-page hardcover volume, entitled The Game of Baseball (New York: George Munro & Co., Publishers, 1868), which is one of the earliest histories of the National Pastime. This extremely rare volume includes rules and instructions for the game, profiles of many leading players, summaries of famous matches, box scores and other important historical information relating to the early days of the game, much of it found nowhere else. "The Chadwick Book," as it is often referred to by advanced collectors, is considered the cornerstone of all important baseball libraries. There are believed to be less than twenty copies in existence. Very Good condition overall. Nearly all of the gilt-stamped lettering on the cover remains intact and legible. The front and back boards display moderate wear including minor abrasions and bumped corners. Some slight separation exists along the spine, however the pages remain tight. The name of a former owner appears in pencil on the inside cover and again in blue ink on the second to last page. There is some very light foxing to both the first and last few pages. All of the interior pages are generally clean and bright. A clean and attractive example of his extremely important and historic work, which is universally recognized as one of the key rarities of all early baseball books. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000. SOLD FOR $4,640.00
