1872-1922 Baseball Guide Book Collection Including Rarities (17)

This substantial collection of early baseball guide books features not only the familiar Reach and Spalding issues but a number of extremely rare publishers as well, including two Victor Baseball Guides, a 1907 Lajoie Guide, and the 1891 Sporting Life Guide. Thirteen of the seventeen guides in the collection date from before 1900. Spalding Guides (5): 1) 1885, rebound with black tape, with original cover, former owner's name and year written on end page, ink notations along a few interior pages, Gd-Vg. 2) 1893, spine repaired with clear tape, year written on end page, ink notations along a few interior pages as well as attached notes, corner chips on front cover, Gd-Vg. 3) 1910, Vg-Ex. 4) 1914, clear tape repair on spine and front cover, a number of small tears along both covers, Vg. 5) 1922, bound in hardcover, "Connie Mack" is gilt-stamped on the red cloth cover indicating that this issue may have once resided in his personal library, with original cover, Vg. Reach Guides (2): 1) 1893, tears and paper loss along spine and back cover, Vg. 2) 1896, a few light tears along the base of the spine and the cover edges. Ex. Beadle Guides (2): 1) 1872, clear tape has been applied to the spine and each cover (entirely) in repair of a few tears and for general support, pages are toned and have separated from the spine, Fr-Gd. 2) 1873, clear tape has been applied to the spine and each cover (entirely) in repair of a few tears and for general support, pages are toned and have separated from the spine, many pages are torn, Fr. Dewitt Guide (1): 1873, clear tape repair to spine, tears and paper loss along covers, minor water damage throughout, Fr-Gd. Victor Guides (2): 1) 1896, bound in hardcover, with original cover, water staining along both covers, Vg. 2) 1897, bound in hardcover, with original cover, light staining along both covers, Vg. Sporting Life (1): 1891, only year of issue for this guide, features coverage of the one-year Player's League, tears, and paper loss along both covers, a name (probably a previous owner) written in ink on the cover and a number of pages, Gd. Lajoie Guide (1): 1907, this guide was only issued for three years, Lajoie is pictured on cover, front cover detached from spine, nearly all of the title page is missing, tears along cover and spine, a number of interior pages have had sections cut out and some interior pages have been torn out. Displays well but technically Fair condition. Miscellaneous Guides (3): 1) 1875 Playing Rules of the National Association of Amateur B.B. Players, published by Peck & Snyder, includes attached "Errata" sheet along title page, slight crease and tear along front cover, front cover also displays retail store stamp, Vg-Ex. 2) 1886 Spalding's American College Base Ball Guide, a few stray interior pencil notations, Ex. 3) 1886 Spalding's Library of Athletic Sports - The Art of Batting And Base Running, front cover torn and almost completely detached from spine, back cover missing, Fr-Gd.
