Circa 1870s American Folk Art Hand-Painted Patriotic Striped Bat

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $11,600.00

Extraordinary example of American folk art in the form of a hand painted bat dating to the 1870s. The 40-inch long bat features a flag-inspired patriotic red, white and blue stripe design on both the barrel and handle and may have been made to commemorate a July 4th game. A lathe mark is present on the knob, and a single vintage nail slightly protrudes from the end of the barrel. The paint is all original. Heavy wear is displayed throughout, including a number of small abrasions and/or chips (especially along the edges of the knob) and a seven-inch crack in the handle. Decorated bats from this era are exceedingly rare and desirable. Ideal for display. This is an exemplary 1870s bat and one that should appeal to both baseball and American folk art collectors. Length: 40 inches. Weight: 37 ounces. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $11,600.00
