1885 S. D Hadley & Company "New Baseball Game"
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $290.00
Extremely rare early baseball game produced strictly as a promotional giveaway by the S. D. Hadley & Co. of Northampton, Massachusetts. We can't imagine that too many of these games were even given away, let alone survived. We have never seen another example. The small 3.75 x 3.75-inch game box features an illustration of a batter on the cover. The interior game board has a baseball diamond design, in the center of which is an advertisement for the company: "While playing this game, remember that S. D. Hadley & Co. Give it away (sic) to every boy or girl who purchases a pair of Boots or Shoes at either of their stores." The rules of the game appear on the reverse of the lid. Copyrighted by H. H. Durgin in 1885, as noted on the cover. The game is missing the original spinner pole and one of the cardboard discs (representing the runners). A strip of vintage clear tape has been applied around the aprons in repair of corner tears. Technically in Very Good condition, but displaying an Excellent overall appearance. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600 SOLD FOR $290.00
