Three 1886 New York Metropolitans (vs. Brooklyn) AA Scorecards
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,740.00
Three extremely rare 1886 New York Metropolitans scorecards featuring portraits of New York Mets players. This is a very rare program series. We have seen literally only a small handful of programs from this series over the years. These programs are distinguished by their unique and very attractive cover designs. Each fold-over scorecard features a black-and-white portrait illustration of a Metropolitan team member set against an attractive multicolor backdrop with floral display. The banner above each portrait reads "The Great Mets." Collectors are especially familiar with the players on the 1886 Mets as these players are featured on the highly prized 1886 Old Judge "Spotted Tie" series. The offered scorecards feature portraits of David Orr, Charles Reipschlager and Steve Behel, respectively. All three scorecards were issued for American Association games against Brooklyn and feature the preprinted lineups for each club. Each game has been neatly recorded in pencil. Each scorecard features advertising on its reverse. These programs originate from a very significant find of Brooklyn-related scorecards that surfaced many years ago. They were found in the possession of a family whose relatives were avid Brooklyn fans and who saved all of the programs from the games they attended. There were only a few New York Metropolitan scorecards in the entire collection. Apparently the family traveled to Staten Island to attend just a few Brooklyn games against the Mets at their ballpark. Two of the scorecards have pencil notations including dates of the games, umpires, etc. All have minor splitting along the spine, which is very common for fold-over scorecards of this era. The scorecard with Orr has a small area of paper loss at the base and is otherwise in Very Good condition. The scorecard with Behel has a few minor border tears and creases, and is otherwise in Very Good condition. The scorecard with Reipschlager has a tiny corner chip at the top of the back cover and is otherwise in Excellent condition. This is a very clean and attractive group. Total: 3 programs. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,740.00
