Circa 1890s Baseball Badges and Belt Buckle (12)

Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $580.00

Collection of eleven children's baseball badges, plus one baseball belt buckle, dating from the late nineteenth century. While many children at the turn of the century were actively taking part in our national pastime, not all could afford uniforms. One method of identifying players by team, instead of uniforms, and also making note of their position on the field, was through the use of small metal badges (1.5 x 1.75 inches), which could be pinned on the front of each player's shirt. Offered are eleven such badges from the era. Ten of the badges are identical in size and shape (shield design) and bear a crossed bats, ball-and-cap motif on the front. The name of a position, or the title of either "umpire" or "manager," is printed on the front of each badge. Each is either yellow or light blue, with illustration and type in either red, blue, or green. Included here are badges for the positions of center field (2), left field, right field, second base (2), manager (2), captain, and umpire. An additional pressed white metal badge, similar in shape but larger in size (2 x 2.25 inches), bears an embossed crossed bat-and-ball motif and the name "Captain" lettered on the front in relief. These badges are undated and it is unknown precisely when they were manufactured, but we believe they date from the 1890s. We have seen political badges of similar design and style of manufacture dating from as late as 1912, though these particular badges appear to date much earlier. If they were produced during the early 1900s, they were clearly designed in the style of the 1890s. Seven of the badges include their original pin backs, while the remaining four are missing the pin component. Each of the badges is in exceptional Very Good to Excellent condition. Included with the badges is a nineteenth-century baseball belt buckle with the initials "B.B.C." within the design of a crossed bat-and-ball motif. The pressed tin buckle (4 x 2.25 inches) is heavily worn, including scratches and abrasions. Total: 12 items (11 badges and a belt buckle). Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400 SOLD FOR $580.00
