Unique 1898 Decorated Baseball Trophy Stein
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $928.00
This pewter tankard, with attached lid, appears at first glance to be a simple trophy awarded to the starting shortstop on the "99" ball club. That information is apparent from the engraving on the front that reads, "Class Base Ball Championship 1898 Won By '99 J. Nowell, S.S." It is also functional, designed to be a pitcher. A peek inside the lid, however, reveals the unique nature of this presentation piece. There, inlaid along the bottom of the tankard, is a reverse-painted glass slide picturing the "99" ball club. Eleven team members are present, including the manager, with the majority bearing the number "99" on their jerseys. The nine-inch tall tankard displays minor surface wear and tarnishing and is in Excellent condition overall. The interior photo, which is colorized and illuminates when held to the light, is in Near Mint condition. This is an extremely unique and very elaborately constructed piece, designed to be a trophy, function as a stein, and be a photographic keepsake. We have never seen another baseball trophy of this unusual style. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $928.00
