Circa 1915 Saturday Evening Post Baseball Postcard Display
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $348.00
Four circa 1915 baseball postcards featuring Saturday Evening Post covers, presented in their original framed display. We have seen this set of four postcards many times in the past, but this is the first time we have seen this specially produced framed retail display. The cards (each 3.5 x 5.5 inches) are mounted on a specially made custom backing. Each of these postcards features a striking baseball scene and showcases the talents of Post cover artist Robert Robinson, one of the top illustrators of the day. Between the years 1910 and 1925, Robinson's work was featured on the cover of the Post twenty-five times. The four images on these postcards are among his most famous cover images. While all of the images are generic in nature, the illustration of the batter bears a striking resemblance to that of Honus Wagner. Each card bears the copyright of both "Edward Gross N.Y." and "The Curtis Publishing Co." on the front. The mount, which also bears the copyright of Edward Gross, features an illustration of a crossed bats-and-ball motif and is titled Exciting Moments. The frame appears to be original to the piece, which was obviously marketed as a special artistic presentation for home decor. Ideal for display, as intended. Dimensions: 19 x 9 inches. Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$300. SOLD FOR $348.00
