Extraordinary 1887 to 1949 Baseball Trophy Collection (24)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,380.00
Collecting, by its very nature, is a never-ending hobby. Collectors are always on the lookout for those special items that suit their particular tastes and wants. So it was with one of our consignors, a gentleman who scoured the country for the past twenty years with an unrivaled devotion in search of trophies relating to our National Pastime. The result of his efforts can in part be seen here, in this collection of twenty-four baseball trophies. It should be understood that these twenty-four pieces represent only a very small portion of his trophy collection, which in total numbered in the hundreds. This selection was very carefully culled from the larger collection by Robert Edward Auctions to form this special lot. Scarcity, design, and stunning visual appeal are the common factors linking these beautiful pieces. The earliest example dates from 1887 and the latest from 1949; however, the majority of the pieces offered here were produced between the years 1910 and 1940. Rarely will one ever see such a substantial array of baseball trophies assembled together at a single time, or a collection more representative of the baseball trophy as an art form. This collection represents a unique collecting opportunity. All of the pieces display some tarnishing and surface wear commensurate with their age, with many also exhibiting a few small "dings" and "dents" so common to older trophies. Excellent condition overall unless otherwise noted. Measurements denote the height of each trophy and the manufacturer, if known, is also listed. 1) 1887 silver plated cup (quadruple plated) with handle bearing a floral design throughout, engraved "Base Ball Championship Henry County Mo. by Calhoun Band 1887," 4 inches, Pairpoint Mfg Co. stamp on bottom. 2) circa 1900 D&M trophy cup, this gorgeous piece (NM) features a baseball figural piece mounted on the lid and the company's "Lucky Dog" logo along the base, mounted on a black wood base, 17 inches. 3) 1902 trophy cup. The highly ornate trophy stands sixteen inches high and features a decorative baseball figure mounted atop the lid. The design includes a bat and ball motif along the stem and a highly detailed floral pattern (in raised relief) throughout. The central front portion bears the engraved inscription "Donated by/Abe Luxton/Manager Bank Hamilton/For Championship/Halton County at Acton/June 26th/02." The manufacturer's name, "S.P. Company Toronto," is engraved on the underside. The piece wobbles slightly. 4) circa 1910 cup with "Baseball League" (as well as a baseball motif) engraved along the top and "Presented by C.W. Brook-Merchant-Nassau" engraved along the base of the stem, 7.25 inches. 5) circa 1910 three-handled trophy cup produced by Wm.
