Enormous Turn-of-the-Century Boston Red Sox Display Bat

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,856.00

This impressive display bat, which measures thirty-four inches in length and weighs over seven pounds, bears the name "Boston Red Sox" stamped on the barrel. Two metal hooks are attached along the top of the barrel and handle, respectively. The bat displays a thick wrap of vintage black tape twelve inches up the handle and is heavily weathered, including a number of fissures throughout. While the origins of this massive piece may never be known for certain, it seems highly probable that it formerly hung over the doorway of a Boston sporting goods store or bar. It would not be hard to imagine it having once hung at McGreevey's bar, where the fabled "Royal Rooters" would ceremoniously toast and celebrate their Red Sox pride. Despite its enigmatic nature, the one thing we can positively state is that this unique bat would make for a striking display in any substantial baseball folk art collection, especially one partial to Red Sox memorabilia. Nuff Said! Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,856.00
