Extraordinary Comic Baseball Postcard Collection (410)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,610.00
Baseball has been a popular theme for amusing postcards since the turn of the century. Presented here is the finest collection of comic baseball postcards we have ever had the privilege of offering. This amazing collection, consisting of 410 postcards, was carefully assembled by our consignor over more than twenty years. Included are cards from fifty-one different cataloged sets, as well as numerous rare and unusual individual examples. The vast majority date from 1900 to 1915, with nearly all having been issued prior to 1950 (approximately ten are of more modern vintage). Incredibly, only fourteen of the postcards are duplicates. It is extremely difficult to fully express in words and images the sheer enormity and scope of this collection, the likes of which would be almost impossible to assemble today without investing many years of effort and searching. Among the various sets represented here (referred to by the catalog numbers first assigned by Burdick and then later added to by Buck Barker and Frank Keetz) are PC798-1, "Fan-ie Series" (near-complete set, eleven of twelve), PC798-36 "The National Game" (complete set of six), PC798-37 "To My Valentine" (complete set of six), PC798-49 "Baseball" (near-complete set, five of six), PC798-51 "L.C. Phifer" cards (complete set of four), and PC798-66 "C.J. Rose" (near-complete set, nineteen of twenty). Approximately 70% of the offered cards (293) are complete or partial sets, with the remainder (117 cards) representing either individual postcards or baseball postcards from otherwise nonbaseball sets. A large majority of the cards bear writing on the reverse and have been mailed. Overall condition ranges from Good to Excellent, averaging Vg-Ex. A listing of all the catalog sets (and number of cards in each) offered in this lot is available by request (in spreadsheet form) and many more images can be found on our web site. This is a unique opportunity to obtain an extraordinary world-class collection of comic baseball postcards. The collection is accompanied by a copy of Frank Keetz' definitive comic postcard guide published in 1983. Total: 410 postcards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,610.00
