Circa 1900 Schafer & Vater Baseball Whiskey Flasks (3)
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,044.00
These three porcelain whiskey flasks, commonly referred to as "nippers," were produced during the early 1900s by the German manufacturing firm of Schafer & Vater. Each nipper features a figure of a ballplayer set within the design of the bottle and bears a different phrase lettered along the base. The first reads "A High Ball," the second "Have A Ball With Me," and the third "Ping Hitter." A "Made in Germany" stamp appears along the bottom of two of the pieces; the third bears no stampings or marks (not uncommon for these pieces). Two of the nippers still retain their original stopper. All measure approximately 3.75 inches in height and are in Near Mint condition. While all three remain perfectly suited for their original function, they are most highly prized today for their exceptional display value. Schafer & Vater was established in 1890 and the company remained in business until World War II. Today, their ceramic works form a distinct field of collectibles, with this trio representing an outstanding collection of three of their most popular sports nippers. Reserve $300. Estimate $600/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
