1888 N172 Old Judge Hengle-Maroons
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,276.00
Graded NM 84 by SGC. Presented is the highest-ever graded N172 Old Judge "Chicago Maroon," featuring the Maroon's second baseman Moxie Hengle. The "Maroons" series, featuring players from the Chicago Maroons of the Western Association, is one of the rarest and most popular subsets of the N172 Old Judge set. Bright and perfectly clean, both front and back, with sharp corners, no creases, and superb contrast. This is a particularly extraordinary card. We have never seen an Old Judge where the Spalding logo on the player's bat was facing the camera and could be seen with such perfect, crisp clarity. Because of the small size of the card and, hence, the Spalding logo, some magnification is needed for most to fully appreciate, but armed with a low-level magnifying glass, the clarity of the Spalding logo is simply shocking. It is "clear as a bell," literally as clear as the logo on a modern bat held in one's hand. This is very unusual. We have never before noticed this extremely desirable quality on an N172 Old Judge. We have provided an enlarged image of the bat on the internet. The Maroons franchise disbanded after a single season, contributing to the rarity of its cards in the Old Judge set. This is a magnificent high-grade sample from the "Maroons" series, which has always been considered among the most elusive and popular of all Old Judges. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
