1913 Christy Mathewson Original Artwork

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $696.00

Exceptional piece of folk art created in 1913, executed in pen and ink on bristol board, capturing Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in a familiar pose. The piece is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner, "H Sutton - Feb '3 '13." Additional information scripted along the base reads "Drawn by Howard Sutton - Age 17 yrs." Christy Mathewson was obviously a worthy subject for the young artist at the time, as "Matty" had won twenty or more games for ten consecutive seasons entering the 1913 campaign. This is an extremely striking and unusual original artwork created as a tribute to the great Christy Mathewson when he ruled the baseball world. As an adult, artist Howard Sutton (1896-1978) went on to become a very successful professional commercial illustrator. This is an extremely attractive period artwork dating to Mathewson's glory years with the New York Giants. The artwork measures 14 x 21 inches. Framed to total dimensions of 21.5 x 29 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $696.00
