1913 Huge American Folk Art Bat

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $580.00

This extremely large and impressive hand-painted folk art bat was created for display and is dated "1913." This custom designed bat, which measures a whopping forty-five inches in length and weighs five pounds, bears the hand-painted notation "Bingo 1913" in red lettering on the barrel. Lathe marks are evident on both the knob and barrel end. The bat exhibits heavy surface wear throughout including abrasions, scratches and tiny chips, a few of which affect the painted lettering. While the precise origins and use of this giant bat may never be known (our guess is that it may have been a bingo game or store display), it remains an impressive example of American folk art from the period, and is a fascinating and striking display piece. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $580.00
