1930 and 1931 NY Giants Sterling Silver Passes
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $1,856.00
Two sterling silver passes issued by the Giants for the years 1930 and 1931, respectively. These passes were distributed to dignitaries and entitled the bearer entry to every Giants game at the Polo Grounds during the season. Each pass (1.75 x 1.5 inches) bears the team name ("Giants") and respective year on the front in raised relief, below which is the name of the team owner ("Horace A. Stoneham Pres."). The reverse of each features the engraved name of the original owner and the official pass number ("Harry Haggerty - 152" for 1930 and "Samuel Frank - 141" for 1931), as well as the name of the manufacturer ("Lambert Bros., N.Y."). This is a particularly desirable pair, as the Giants decorated their passes for the 1930 and 1931 seasons with a very famous two-panel baseball cartoon in high relief. The front of the 1930 pass features the first panel of the cartoon, which pictures three hopeful hometown fans caught up in the anticipation of the final moments of the game. The situation is conveyed by their expressions and the caption "2 out, Bases Full, 3 balls, 2 strikes." The second pass features the same three fans, only this time they are slumped in their seats, deflated, with the caption "Fanned Out" displayed above. Both passes display natural tarnishing consistent with their age (these could easily be polished to perfection if desired), and are otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Total 2 passes. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $1,856.00
