Japanese Baseball Novelty Collection (28)
Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $290.00
Fascinating collection of rare baseball novelties originating from "The Land of The Rising Sun." Japan was one of the first foreign countries in which the American game of baseball became popular. That fact, combined with the country's incredible manufacturing capabilities following the war, led to the production of numerous toys and novelties featuring a baseball motif. Presented here is a diverse collection of those attractive and scarce pieces that date from the 1940s through the 1960s. The highlight of the collection is a complete unused Japanese children's crayon set featuring a picture of baseball great Sadaharu Oh and another player on the cover. Produced by The Japan Stationery Co., LTD., the box (11 x 3.5 x .5 inches) is titled "Pentel Homerun Pas" and is complete with its twenty-five original crayons and a promotional baseball card. Near Mint. Also included are two rare pencil boxes, one wood and the other tin. The wood box (9 x 3 1.25 inches) appears to be by far the older of the two, and features an engraved image of a player on the cover (Vg). The tin box (8.25 x 2.5 x 1 inches) also bears an illustrated image of a pitcher (in a "Tokyo" uniform) on the cover and is lettered "Sports" (Ex). The remaining twenty-five items are comprised of two identical mechanical "clickers" featuring an opposing batter and pitcher (Ex-Mt, and Ex, 3.5 x 3 inches), a baseball "squeeze box" (Ex-Mt, approximately 4.5 x 5 inches), three baseball "clickers" (Ex-Mt, 1.5 x 2.5 inches), a baseball whistle, bat and ball in their original cellophane packaging (Ex-Mt, 3 x 6 inches), a circular mirror with an illustrated baseball design on the front (Vg, 2 inches in diameter), and seventeen various metal whistles including six duplicates (Vg to Ex-Mt, averaging Ex; various sizes, averaging 1.5 x 2 inches). This is an advanced collection of Japanese baseball novelties, an area of collecting which has received very little attention, which was assembled over a period of many years. Total: 28 items. Reserve $100. Estimate $200/$400. SOLD FOR $290.00
