1927 New York Yankees Ron Lewis Original Baseball Card Artwork Collection (31 Paintings)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,624.00
In 1984 Renata Galasso issued a set of thirty baseball cards commemorating what is considered by many to be the greatest team of all time: the 1927 New York Yankees. To illustrate the set, the company commissioned renowned sports artist Ron Lewis to create individual portrait illustrations of each team member as well as owner Jacob Ruppert and general manager Ed Barrow. Offered are all thirty of those original Ron Lewis oil on board paintings (plus one extra) used in the production of the set. Included here are the artworks for Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Miller Huggins, Herb Pennock, Waite Hoyt, Earle Combs, Jacob Ruppert, Ed Barrow, Mark Koenig, Joe Dugan, Bob Shawkey, Bob Meusel, Urban Shocker, Pat Collins, Cedric Durst, Mike Gazella, Myles Thomas, Charlie O'Leary, Ray Morehart, John Grabowski, Benny Bengough, Walter Beall, Joe Giard, Julian Wera, Dutch Ruether, Wilcy Moore, Art Fletcher, George Pipgras, and Ben Paschal. Also included is a portrait image of Don Miller. Don Miller was never officially on the Yankees roster in 1927; however, he does appear in a number of team pictures with the club from that season. For that reason he was not included in the set, but Lewis saw fit to paint his image as well. A number of artworks from this collection were previously displayed at the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum during the late 1980s, as part of the museum's exhibit on the 1927 Yankees, and the collection is accompanied by a Museum press release announcing their display at that time. Each artwork (image area only) measures approximately 6.5 x 8 inches, with thirteen paintings matted to slightly larger dimensions. Fourteen of the artworks have been painted in tandem (two to a board). Eleven of the paintings have been signed by Lewis in pencil (below the image) on the lower margin of the board, and one has been signed directly on the painting. Ron Lewis is one of the premier sports artists of our time, best known to collectors today for his famous 500 Home Run Club and 3,000 Hit Club artworks. In addition to his baseball pieces, Lewis has also created a number of memorable works relating to the sports of football, basketball and boxing. Original Ron Lewis paintings are highly prized by collectors in both the fields of sports and art, but this is the first time we have seen the originals available from one of the few card sets for which he produced the artwork. These artworks have been in the possession of the publisher since commissioned in 1984 and have never before been offered for sale, let alone as a complete collection. All are in Excellent to Mint condition. Included with the original paintings is a complete set of the 1984 Renata Galasso 1927 New York Yankees baseball card set (Nr-Mt). Total: 31 original Ron Lewis paintings plus the published card set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $1,624.00
