1889 Cincinnati Red Stockings Cabinet Card

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,088.00

Extremely rare team composite cabinet card (4.25 x 6.5 inches) featuring portraits of the 1889 Cincinnati Red Stockings, including Hall of Famer Bid McPhee. Also pictured are (starting from the top left, reading from left to right) Jim Keenan, Lee Viau, Elmer Smith, Tony Mullane, Hick Carpenter, Bug Holliday, George Tebeau, Hugh Nicol, Kid Baldwin, Aaron Stern (president of the club), John Reilly, Ollie Beard, Gus Schmelz (manager) and one unidentified (name completely faded or never present). Each player is identified in block print beneath his portrait. Advertising for Levi & Gold Studios of Cincinnati, Ohio, on mount; with blank back. Nineteenth-century team cabinets have always been highly prized by card collectors. This is one of the few cards to feature Bid McPhee. The offered example has exceptionally strong contrast and photo quality. Bright, clean and perfectly centered. There is a small strip of white tape across the top of the reverse and a small round surface abrasion in the upper right (which appears to possibly be the result of a removed price sticker). Both of these reverse flaws are extremely minor and are mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. The card is otherwise in Near Mint condition. This is by far the finest of the few examples of this rare team cabinet we have ever seen. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,088.00
